The Class 317 electric multiple unit is a well proven 4-car unit that has run on the UK rail network since 1981.

The class has been well maintained, and seen various refurbishments and improvements through its service life including full overhaul to a new condition every 5 to 7 years.

The Class 317 is based on the BR Mk 3 coaching stock design, known for its smooth high-speed running. Passenger accommodation may vary by operator, with some mixed 1st / 2nd class and other units all 2nd class.

Vehicles are connected by a flexible diaphragm, are air conditioned, have wheelchair seating areas and public address and information display systems.

Standard gauge, and capable of running on any 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead electrified network with the appropriate clearance.
